Morro Bay History

Morro Bay has history dating back to 1542. Morro Bay is a working harbor town and is the home of the world famous Morro Rock. Morro Rock was named in 1542 by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo who explored the Pacific Coast for Spain. Juan named the rock after the turbans of the Moors from North Africa. Morro Bay grew as a port for ship goods. In 1933 the WPA began construction on a jetty to connect the Rock with the mainland. Morro Rock stands about 576 feet above the bay. Today Morro Bay offers sweeping ocean views and easy access to state parks and plenty of fishing.
